5 keys to start doing actual magic

Here are 5 ways to start doing actual magic….

1. Let go of whether you are "doing it right”or not...

It's a sexy thought that if only we found the true, right, absolutely pure and authentically ancient way to divine, cast spells, meditate, astral project, worship, keep an altar, we'd open the secret vast stores of power held within and shock ourselves. I'm here to tell you, that's utter crap.

The only way for you to actually unlocking your vast stores of power and inner magic to manifest is to first and foremost drop your obsession with rules, aesthetics and ancient traditions and get really interested doing it all wrong and have fun.

How wrong? Super-wrong. Backwards and upside down. Why? Because when you fuck up, you learn from your mistakes. Even if you half-ass your way through hundreds of really fun experimental spells and rituals, and a few years later you wind up feeling exponentially more happy and confident in your magic than if you were worrying about “not doing it right” the whole time.

Basically if you haven’t gathered yet, magic is all about gaining experience. Only then will you deeply know what works and what doesn’t.

2. Start with what you are really turned on about.

If you pick up one of the hundreds of beginners’ books on magic, you will find massively joy-killing suggestions like:

“start by doing the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram twice a day every day for six months before you even cast a spell”

“recite this rhyming poem to the Goddess every morning”

“purify your bad, bad self every night for a month by imagining yourself surrounded by a ball of glowing golden light”

Now look, I’m not hating on these things. I happen to love everything from the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram to reciting rhyming poems to the Holy Goddess and imagining myself cozily wrapped up in universal purified golden white light. Who wouldn’t? Who doesn’t?

What I’m saying is this: magic is about thrills and chills, and human motivation is a very delicate thing. A person needs real oomph and a reason that moves them or deep meaning - to get out of their comfort zone.

So my suggestion for getting started in magic would be: do whatever you have to do to trick yourself into doing some far-out stuff that’s both exciting and fun.

3. Stop waiting for the “you’re a real and powerful witch!” fairy to descend.

Wouldn’t it be grand if you woke up in the middle of one otherwise uneventful night sleep and found a giant glowing fairy standing at the foot of your bed, pronouncing the truth that you are the latest in a line of powerful sorceresses descended from Hecate herself…… and this means that you are a real, bonafide, genuine powerful witch, unlike all those stupid “pretenders” on the internet!! Hah.

This would be great because it would involve a big external authority doing the work of removing all your self-doubt, and rocketing you into a new dimension — where you never again had to feel silly whilst getting naked and covering yourself in oil and masturbating about your manifesting your dream career and income. This would be terrible and useless because it would still constitute an external authority to remove all your self doubt.

Why is that terrible and useless?  Because the only actual way to grow is to stop looking for an external authority to remove all your self-doubt.

4. Go with the planets.

If you’re like me, you’ve spent countless hours agonizing about whether or not it’s okay to do a tantalizing spell from a specific tradition that’s not your own ancestral tradition. Well, here’s something that simplified things for me: planetary magic.

Why is planetary magic so great? Well, because they’re the fucking planets and stars in the sky, and they don’t belong to any one specific ancestral tradition. They belong to everyone! This opens up a wide field of exploration: Mercury magic, Venus magic, Mars magic, Jupiter magic, Saturn magic, Earth magic, Lunar Magic, Solar magic… you get the idea. 

Here’s another great thing about planetary magic: it f*cking works.

5. Get crystal clear about what you want.

Not what you “should” want.  Not what it’s “good” to want. But what do you actually want?

Magic runs on sheer electric desire. It doesn’t run on niceness or self-righteousness. So if you do nothing else particularly witchy in a given day, just try this: ask yourself “what do I really, really, really want?” and journal about the answer. Let that lead you forward.
