Because of this, people sometimes ask me...
What exactly is magic?
So…
There's a lot of answers to that one question — because magic is the second oldest profession in the world.
Yet, it is new to every generation.
The description of magic in the dictionary is described as the following: The power of apparently influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces.
The truth is magic is much more subtle, and yet more powerful, than any mere fantasy.
Back in the late 1300s, the French word “magique” entered the English language and became “magic.”
With the common french definition being: “The art of influencing events and producing marvels using hidden natural forces.”
And thousands of years before that, mystics and magicians were known as magi and they were the advisers to kings and emperors.
For you and me, it’s more accurate to say that magic is the art of consciously participating in the co-creative forces of the Universe — by directing the energies of nature to cause desired changes in one’s life.
Knowing that reality is fluid and ever-changing, mystics and mage’s use a variety of methods to connect their personal power with the power that governs the workings of the Universe.
And my answer to you would be... Magic is any way of engaging with the world that takes as its fundamental premise: As within, so without, as above, so below.
That specific famous quote comes from an ancient type of magic, as it comes from the Emerald Tablet.
The Emerald Tablet is associated with Hermeticism and ancient Greek / Egyptian magic.
But that idea, “As above, so below, as within, so without”, is the idea that there's a relationship and correspondence between our internal worlds.
We have our subjective universe of what you know what happens, in our nighttime dreams, our emotions, our fantasies, dream images, our will.
What happens inside of us, our “as within” — and we have what happens in the outside world, the physical world or the objective world and the “as without”.
So, just as you know, “As above, so below,” likewise is in terms of as what happens at a grand scale also happens at a small scale.
Like the movements of astrology. Astrology, is also a part of magic.
This is because: the movements of planets and their houses and their signs and where they are at any given time - from a magical point of view - has a relationship (a very interesting and important relationship) to our internal world and our experience.
I find that to be a useful definition of magic, because if you take a look at all at various kinds of magic around the world: Hoodoo folk magic, Indigenous Shamanism, Wicca, Chaos Magic, American folk magic, Ceremonial Magic, all various Tibetan tantric Buddhist magic, Law of Attraction, Witchcraft, etc. All of these various very diverse forms of magic have in common, that they understand that they take as a fundamental premise, of all of their activities all of their rituals, all of their spells all of their writing, all of their divination; everything takes into account that there's a relationship between the internal and the external.
So you might think to yourself… “Well damn that's obvious - of course there's a relationship.”
But it's not obvious.
And if you say that it is obvious to you, then I would say, well you have a magical worldview.
With a magical worldview, you have an option that is the most pragmatic, realistic and practical, and the most useful.
And basically what magic does, is it acknowledges that there is this relationship of analogy between what is within, and what is without, what is above, and what is below.
Then we start to think, “Hmm, well if I work on what is within, I will probably experience a different something or other without, right?”
And magically speaking, yes you'd be right.
So, in a very broad sense, that's what we do in Magical Rituals: Radical Magic for 40 days of magic.
We work on what is within in a really intense way. I specialize in shadow integration in this one, so we’ll get into some pretty dark and heavy stuff.
However, the 40 day journey is fantastic, there's a lot of support, a lot of fun, and a lot of love in our group and portal.
We’ll experience external changes in response to our internal changes and there's a lot of other layers to that — and a lot of other fun complexities that come in throughout the journey.
But that's the basic point right there.
